Keiko report: November 3, 2018

Attendees: Zendai, Victor
Material:
-Warmup
-Basic strikes
-‎Break falls
-Kogusoku koshinomawari

On this day, we started doing kogusoku. This set is central to Takeuchiryu and is often said to contain the essence of the style. We will begin working on this in a more focused way after we wrap up the first 8 of iai. At the same time, I hope to start working on shihanbo after finishing up kenbo shin in the next few weeks.

Keiko report: October 27, 2018

Attendees: Zendai, Yuchen, Victor
Material:
-Warmup
-Basic strikes
-‎Break falls
-Saide omote
-Sakushu iai
-Kenbo shin
-Kumiuchi

Today, we went through the first 8 of sakushu iai and all 12 of kenbo shin. These two fundamentals are often covered early in Takeuchi-ryu along with other sets such as the first half of short sword and the basics of unarmed combat. Iai and bo are especially good to learn early as they are conducive to practicing by yourself and drill fundamental posture and good form.

Keiko report: October 20, 2018

Attendees: Zendai, Yuchen, Victor
Material:
-Warmup
-Basic strikes
-‎Break falls
-Kenbo shin (latter half)

The various kinds of bojutsu we do covers a range of lengths from longer than body height with the kenbo to 1 shaku (about a foot) at tanbo. From the basic stance to handling weapons of various lengths, the bo sets hold a wealth of information and should be thoroughly practiced. Kenbo is good for this since it can be practiced alone as long as you have a stick (a broom handle will work fine). It does not have to be of the standard length.

Material:
-Warmup
-Basic strikes
-‎Break falls
-Knee walking
-Basic kenjutsu

Doing techniques and kata individually can help with form and self awareness. To put them into context, however, paired practice and drills are indispensable. To this end, the basic strikes and blocks today were done paired. It might be interesting to see how other basics such as rolls and break falls can be done in a paired manner as well. I suspect there will be challenges in doing kneeling rolls and break falls in pairs, however, since there is little room to maneuver…
